Manchester City F.C.

The club was founded as a limited company in 1894. They were formed after their predecessors Ardwick went into bankruptcy. The Ardwick clubs history does stretch back to 1880, first named West Gorton they changed address and name on numerous occasions. They moved to Maine Road in 1923, a ground they spent eighty years at until moving to the new City of Manchester Stadium in 2003.

In 1934 Maine Road hosted 84,569 fans versus Stoke City during a 6th round tie of the FA Cup. The attendance was a record for Maine Road, and also a British record for any game outside of London and Glasgow. The club has won the first division of English football twice in 1936-37 and 1967-68. The league triumph in 1937 is out of memory for most fans. But the 1968 win still lingers in many Mans City fans minds. Forged by a management team of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison. They created the greatest side in City's history.

From 1965 when they were appointed, they won the FA Cup in 1969, the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1970, and managed to finish runner's up in the league on two occasions (both times just 1 point behind the league winners). The team played attractive football, and featured star players like Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee and Francis Lee. During this period they also played one of City's most famous results. Away to Man Utd in 1974, they won 0-1 due to a Denis Law backheel, which meant the relegation of their famous cross city rivals.

The 1980's, 1990's was a lean period for silverware. During the 1990's the club was even relegated to the third tier of English football. Kevin Keegan was the man responsible for returning the club back to the Premier League. The current manager is Sven-Göran Eriksson, whose last job was as the England manager. The early signs are promising, leading City to the top of the Premier League, they are still challenging for a place in the top 4 and qualification for the Champions League. For the first time since 1974 and Denis Law's backheel City won at Old Trafford.

During an emotional tie commemorating the Munich Disaster they ran out victors 1-2. It was also the first time City did the double over Utd since 1970. City are often seen as the club of the people. A club supported by and large by Manchurians. The support the club receives is staggering considering their last of success. Even in the third tier of English football they were attracting full houses of over 30,000 fans.
