Home: Portsmouth F.C.
Foundation was during a meeting in 1898, the men meeting included solicitor Alderman J.E. Pink who agreed to buy some land near Goldsmith Avenue which they developed into Fratton Park. With humble beginnings the club spent the majority of it's early years in the Southern League. They did have an outstanding team in 1902-03, with eight internationals including Albert Houlker, Daniel Cunliffe, Steve Smith, Fred Wheldon, Arthur Chadwick, Matt Reilly, Bob Marshall and Sandy Brown. The club managed to establish itself in the top flight in the 1930's, reaching a couple of FA Cup Finals and finally forging a superb team post World War 2. The team was full of internationals, and won the division one championship in consecutive years, 1948-49, 1949-1950. Portsmouth were relegated in 1959, and spent the majority of the next forty years in the second and third divisions. In 1998 the club went into financial administration. They were saved by Milan Mandaric. He brought in Harry Redknapp as manager in 2002. Alongside veteran Jim Smith they got Pompey promoted to the Premier League for the first time in 2003. The club has continued to flourish in the league. Portsmouth have also unveiled plans to build a new 36,000 - seater stadium. With 750 new homes built in the project the overall cost will be 600 million pounds and hopefully be completed in 2011. The most capped player in the clubs history is Jimmy Dickinson with 48
England caps, he also has the most league appearances for Pompey with
764 between 1946-65.
